Spring in Las Vegas is one of the best times of the year to enjoy the mix of cool evenings and warm days. It’s also one of the worst times of the year for Las Vegas pests. Sometimes it can literally seem like they’re coming out of the woodwork – and sometimes they actually are.

This article gives you the low down on the top 10 creatures that might bug you this spring. The good news? One phone call to Preventive Pest will help you take back control of your home or yard.

Top 10 Worst Pests in Nevada

  • A is for ants and they are everywhere in the desert. There are seven common species in Nevada and some of them are smelly, others will sting you, while others might munch on the foundation of your home.

  • B is for bees, and while the lovely honeybee is important for pollination outside, there are more aggressive bee strains here that are truly dangerous to humans and animals. Since we’ve mentioned bees, as an added bonus, let’s throw in other stinging insects like wasps and yellow jackets, which can sting you repeatedly – sometimes to death.
  • Cockroaches are disgusting, and like ants, they live with us 24/7 – but you may not notice them until you’re overrun. Homes and businesses have these nocturnal creatures sometimes hiding in plain sight, so having a professional who knows what to look for can help you stop them before they become a problem.
  • Not only do we have crickets in Nevada, we have Jerusalem crickets that can be over three inches long. If they get in your pantry they’ll munch on anything they can find. In the garden, they like plants, but inside the home, they enjoy fabrics and can cause real damage.
  • Earwigs don’t get in your ears, but they like the foundations of our homes and can be a foul-smelling unpleasant little invader. They can do a lot of damage in the vegetable garden though.
  • Kids call them roly-poly’s because they curl up in a little armored ball like an armadillo when you touch one. But they’re called pill bugs or sow bugs and we’re often called upon to help homeowners get rid of the little creatures. But the biggest problem is that they can injure young pets outside, along with just generally being gross on the carpet indoors.
  • Scorpions are definitely a creature to be nervous about if you see one around your home. Unfortunately, you may not realize it, but they’re everywhere hiding under plants, rocks, and dry wood in the yard. We’ve seen dozens swarm out from a rock wall at night – something to give you nightmares for a few weeks.
  • Silverfish can infest a restaurant or home and do damage to stored foods or dry goods. In fact, we’re often called to printing companies because these little flat bugs like to eat paper.
  • Spiders can certainly be beneficial in the yard and garden, but most people really wish they wouldn’t come any closer. Especially in Nevada, where we not only have a lot of spiders, we have a lot of big spiders – and even small ones that have poisonous bites.
  • Finally, mice and rats are a big problem in Las Vegas. They’re a health hazard and breed prolifically, so call a professional right away.
